The Human Factors Consultant applies various human performance and human factors/ergonomics methodologies to assess performance, process, design, workflow, equipment, and the environment with the purpose of driving improvement and reducing patient harm. This position requires specialized expertise in the body of knowledge, methods, and skills related to Human Factors Engineering/Psychology and Sociotechnical Systems Science, quality improvement, ergonomics, and event reviews/hazard analyses.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Proactively mitigates patient safety risk factors to improve human and organizational performance for YNHHS. Provide strategies/tactics/services related to human factors methodologies to examine adverse events and recommend and coordinate error reduction efforts to minimize safety issues and risk.
  • 2. Develops project plans, interventions, and resources by integrating human factors methodology and research to achieve the visionary/strategic objectives of stakeholders. Incorporates active/effective decision making and problem solving. Maintains and monitors project work plans to support the successful achievement of local, divisional and organizational goals/aims.
  • 3. Designs and executes tests to simulate product use for the purpose of product procurement, use-risk identification, and formal usability testing with intended users. Interfaces with key personnel to identify and analyze product or equipment problems or risks, performing human factors investigations, and developing and implementing action plans for correction.
  • 4. Partners with facilities and leadership to integrate system design improvements using human factors engineering principles. Works collaboratively/cooperatively with others to achieve goals. Develops positive working relationships with peers/colleagues. Shares knowledge and/or provides support for team members. Contributes to and promotes a positive and professional work environment/atmosphere.
  • 5. Develops and conducts independent and collaborative health care human factors research studies. Conducts extensive literature reviews and summarizes findings. Manages and performs data collection activities, analyzes data, and presents findings internally and externally.
  • 6. Leads the development of a human factors standard; provides in-house training and promotes the importance of human factors engineering and develops training methods and materials, such as curriculums and courses.
  • 7. Demonstrates ability to effectively convey information related to complex clinical or business processes
  • 8. Supports safety/quality efforts by providing human factors support to cause analysis teams, Serious Event Review Committee meetings, and development of action plans
  • 9. Maintains and stays current with industry relevant human factors best practices and research.

Qualifications

EDUCATION


MS in Human Factors Engineering/Psychology or related field (e.g., industrial/systems engineering, cognitive neuroscience, perception, industrial/organizational psychology, or ergonomics) from a fully accredited college or university.


EXPERIENCE


At least 3 years related experience. Healthcare related experience required. Must have strong consulting skills, strong presentation skills and experience managing or facilitating change from a consultative role.


SPECIAL SKILLS


Advanced computer skills with demonstration of skill and competence in use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications required Knowledge of human performance analysis and improvement methods, techniques and best practices required. Good understanding of research processes and methodologies including qualitative and quantitative research methods. Effective team management and communication skills. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research team and deliver timely outcomes.


PHYSICAL DEMAND


Ability to lift up to approximately 100 pound manikin and associated equipment preferred. Works in an office environment; requires walking, standing, and long periods of sitting and computer use; intact sense of sight and hearing required. Travels to YNHHS facilities in personal vehicle as needed.
