Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Costume Shop Manager position. The Costume Shop Manager is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $80,000 per year - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Costume Shop Manager oversees the production of costumes, costume facilities, and costume shop budget for the annual performance season of the Department of Theater and Dance. Responsibilities include executing costume designs in collaboration with shop staff; maintaining equipment, supplies, and storage facilities; training and supervising student shop crew; and attending production meetings, departmental meetings, and technical and dress rehearsals required to successfully achieve departmental objectives and production goals. The Costume Shop Manager is also expected to support students in a diverse learning environment, and contribute to departmental efforts in creating an inclusive work environment.

Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Manage costume production and costume shop budget.
  • Execute costume designs in collaboration with staff draper for departmental production season, including procurement of all necessary costumes, materials and supplies.
  • Maintain costume shop equipment and supplies, and storage facilities.
  • Supervise and train a diverse student work-study crew in the production of costumes.
  • Attend weekly production meetings, and departmental meetings as required.
  • Attend production technical and dress rehearsals.


Qualifications:

Required
  • BA or BFA in Theater, Costume Technologies or relevant field, and three to five years of related experience.
  • A minimum of three years experience in combined shop management, wardrobe supervising, draping and stitching.
  • In lieu of minimum education and related experience, an equivalent combination of education/experience that includes at least three years of Costume Shop Management.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community.


Preferred
  • Five years or more of experience in combined shop management, wardrobe supervising, draping and stitching is preferred.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of students is also preferred.
