As a Technical Product Manager in R&D (Research and Development), you will Support the ELSP (Electrification Smart Power) Business at our site in Bloomfield, CT. In this role, you will display strong leadership skills and demonstrable experience in technical fundamentals, quality, safety and compliance, and new product introduction implementation. You will serve as a technical expert in R&D for the Enclosed Safety Switch and first contact person in R&D for (market-facing) product management, and other external stakeholders like engineering. You will also support the team on product-related issues and drive the technical direction of development (e.g., acting as product owner in an agile team) and/or organize product maintenance, supporting Global Product Groups and Manufacturing Hub on product-related issues and organize product maintenance and new projects for the product line.

Your responsibilities

  • Translates market requirements into appropriate product features.
  • Ensures that the product has a well-defined architecture, and that the development result is well maintainable.
  • Works as an independent and reliable contributor in R&D projects, requiring only limited supervision.
  • Demonstrates solid technical proficiency in own area of competence and embraces best practices.
  • Performs a variety of tasks in the assigned area (e.g., mechanics, electronics, thermal, software), from concepts and requirements through design, implementation, integration, and testing, to technology transfer or maintenance and operations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to independently recognize problems and provide input to solutions.
  • Stays abreast of the state of the art (industry/academia) in own competence area as well as new/ evolving technologies, actively applies knowledge and goes beyond as required.
  • Provides input regarding technology content/development for current and future business with the product, based on a solid understanding of ABBs technology landscape, state-of-the-art external technology, and current/future customer needs.
Your background

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred) with 8 plus years experience in the development of products & solutions (Electrical industry preferred).
  • Experience in manufacturing implementation of new and modified designs.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification highly preferred.
  • Expertise in product and solution level testing desired and experience on working with global test labs and certification agencies.
  • Knowledge of certification standards for electrical equipment (UL, IEC, IEEE).
  • Experience with design and product documentation (Creo and Windchill preferred).
  • Proven ability to analyze test data and solve design issues.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to influence and drive change/results.
  • Experience defining, designing, and integrating cost effective, compliant solutions.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks, take ownership and drive results.
  • Must possess a high level of motivation and resourcefulness working in an open environment.
  • Track record executing product design projects in teams and individually.
  • Experience with Switches, Transfer switches, Automatic transfer switches, electrical panelboards, circuit breakers, similar products or other Electro-Mechanical design and testing experience.
  • Experience in testing, DoE, and data analysis.
  • Experience applying solutions to solve problems with a mindset of innovation and creativity.
  • Proven record of engineering analysis and design execution success.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
