Project/Unit Description

The Embedded Systems Vulnerability Division (ESVD) within CIPHER leverages extensive expertise in hardware, software, network, and RF communications to identify and evaluate cyber vulnerabilities in military assets, industrial control systems, and critical infrastructure systems. CIPHER researchers participate in Department of Defense working groups on cyber
vulnerability assessments and collaborate with Georgia Tech faculty on the security of IoT and critical infrastructure systems. They have evaluated a wide range of systems from aircraft and radar simulators to smart grid and building management systems.

Job Purpose

Technical personnel to be part of an established team of experts in the assessment of battlefield electronic systems.A highly motivated individual to support assessment of software and/or firmware of embedded communications systems. The candidate will perform analysis of software/firmware from embedded and PC-based systems for identification of system technical capabilities and potential vulnerabilities. The following skills/experience are highly desired: experience with a variety of microprocessor architectures and programmable logic devices, software reverse engineering, knowledge of typical encryption and authentication schemes used in wireless communications, digital communication theory, networking protocols, embedded operating systems , and embedded system programming.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in static and dynamic analysis of software/firmware components of communication systems
  • Assist in development of software analysis tools to assist in the reverse engineering process
  • Research communication theory concepts (such as modulation, spread spectrum, error correction coding, synchronization, etc.) and implementation methods to help in determining software functionality
  • Assist in development and use of virtual and emulation environments for executing software under test
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Top Secret Clearance
  • Experience with disassemblers such as Ghidra and IdaPro
  • Experience developing plugins for disassemblers
  • Experience with capture the flag events
  • Experience with firmware/software reverse engineering
  • Experience with hardware reverse engineering
  • Experience in 1 or more programming languages
  • Experience developing embedded systems
  • Experience with PCB level communication buses (SPI, I2C, Etc)
  • Experience with software defined radios
  • Experience with debuggers
  • Experience with dynamic/static analysis and fuzzing
  • Experience with JTAG/ChipWhisperer
